about: MARCHING

Marching in its broadest sense has a long tradition in many societies across the world. Loaded with history, symbols, banners, costumes, music and often ritual, this public and collective mode of (organised) walking is often used as a form of celebration, expression or protest – whether that be in a social, political or cultural context.
At a time of the year when the word ‘marches’ in itself holds particular significance in Northern Ireland, this exhibition seeks to explore the idea of marching in an open and objective manner.
Drawing upon material from the Belfast Exposed photography archive. The images on view were taken during the first Belfast City Carnival in 1995.
