Bag of Excuses

Part of Imagine Festival

Gemma Mae Halligan and Sinead O’Neill-Nicholl

Bag of Excuses, an immersive installation blending textile work, soundscapes, film and everyday objects by Gemma Mae Halligan and Sinead O’Neill-Nicholl that explores the eight recognised stages on the femicide timeline, revealing how violence can grow from seemingly ordinary moments.

Halligan, a theatre maker, specialising in devised theatre and O’Neill-Nicholl, a sound installation artist with a research based practice, have been exploring the research around femicide by Professor Jane Monckton-Smith.

The installation is inspired by source material obtained from the BBC Sounds Assume Nothing podcast Femicide: Eight Steps to Stop a Murder and this current iteration of this work includes bespoke creative workshops for young women, young men and older women.

The exhibition, an artist talk and public workshops is part of Imagine Festival of Ideas and Politics
