The background for this debate was two video projects at PS²; including the recently finished ‘play station’ / ‘3 x 3’ showcasing new video work by 9 young artists. The videos, ranging from performance documentation, animation and experimental takes were presented on TV sets; a format that for many of the participants was ‘out of context’. Most contemporary video work forms part of an installation and can not be isolated. But where is it better placed? Film festivals, which occasionally show art videos, face the dilemma that they are mostly not made for cinema screening. Are galleries and museums therefore the right venue, with space enough to stage them? Or is the pop industry and their music channels the real home, as the current exhibition ‘Return of Crashpad’, (Visonic@PS²) might suggest?
